One of the credentials for your website being ranked well in the search engines is link popularity. What this means is that if another website is showing your link, the search engines see this as a popularity point for your website. If that website has some PR then it will boost your perceived popularity even more. You can download the Google toolbar here so that you can tell at a glance whether a site has PR or not. You should not only decide whether to add your link to the site depending on its PR as the passable on PR can be diluted, you should also look at how many outgoing links that website page already has. If it is a PR2 for example with a list of 50 outgoing links, you would be better opting for a PR1 with only 5 outgoing links. Also remember with PR, if the site has some PR sooner or later that page with the post you are considering commenting on, will also have some PR so don’t rule out a PR0 indefinitely.
The other thing to consider is the text of your link, you do not want to put your website name as the chances are this already ranks well in search engines. Without going into the subject too much in this post, the best way to approach this is to choose a list of 5 key phrases which you would like to be on Google’s first page for. As an example, for Turnkey Designs we are currently using the key phrase wordpress web sites, previously we used wordpress websites (a small difference but there is a difference). Watch your search engine positioning and use your first chosen key phrase until it can be found on Google search page number 1 when searching for that term. Once it is there move on to your next key phrase.
There are many ways to get back links to your site, for example forum posting, link swaps etc. but I have come across a very unique way which I had never heard of. Normally when replying to a blog post you can add your url as a link but, the problem is the link is linked to your name not your keyphrase. For example I would probably rank great for Penny Lamont which I don’t really want to, I want to rank well for Wordpress web design and the only way to do this is to place Wordpress web design as my name, in which case the likelihood is that I would be labelled a spammer and my post would never be published. Now here’s the really clever part …. there is a Wordpress plugin called KeywordLuv which when installed on someones website allows you to enter your name in the format penny@Wordpress web design, this in turn means that you will receive a valuable link to your website using your key phrase. So…the next step is to figure out how we find the websites which have KeywordLuv installed in order that we can offer up some useful comments on posts and gain a free valuable backlink. To do this you just do a search for the following in Google:
“Enter YourName@YourKeywords in the Name field to take advantage” + Wordpress
Copy that phrase exactly (including the inverted commas) but change the Wordpress part at the end to whatever you’re website is about, eg. ecological. You will then receive Google results for all the websites which have KeywordLuv included and you can whizz through them, check out the PR, check out the number of responses and if it looks worthwhile add your own response. Obviously don’t spam, make a comment about what has been said in the post and make it as interesting as possible, sometimes if you are really stuck just undying praise for the poster will work
Your comment content won’t matter to the search engines but it will matter to the poster and/or owner of the site as to whether they approve you or not and no one wants a load of spam on their site.
If you’re wasting a lot of time building back links and need some help or just want to find out more about back linking check out the free videos here
If you want to add KeywordLuv to your own blog you need to download it from here (don’t unzip it), then go to plugins and choose install and find it on your hard drive. You will also need to add a dofollow plugin as WP has a nasty nofollow tag by default. You can automatically install this by just doing a search for nofollow in the plugin install area, I am going to add KeywordLuv to this website now, so try it out here and place a comment! (I have just spent 10 minutes trying to understand why it hadn’t installed and then realised that it won’t show if you are logged in as admin, so logout and save yourself 10 minutes

Hello, I was reading something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read earlier. I am still pondering over the opposite points of view, but I’m leaning to a great extent toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what is so great about modern-day democracy and the marketplace of ideas online.

Hello, yes please do
I think this post was probably a solid start to a potential series of blog posts about this topic. A lot of writers pretend to know what they are talking about when it comes to this stuff and really, very few people actually get it. You seem to grasp it however, so I think you need to take it and run. Thank you!
Your blog is so informative … keep up the good work!!!!
